1st Semester AP EXAM



AP EXAM


Yes, you have an exam. No you are not exempt because of your senior status. This is a college level class and there is much to be done. Your exam will consist of:


1. Updating your blog. Include not only pictures of all of your works, but explanations about techniques, glazes and reflections. Make sure to proofread.


2. Sketch book with new ideas and sketches. You can also include copies of inspirational pieces.


3. Visit an art gallery or go to an art show. The current exhibit at The Manatee Art Center has two very good ceramic artists. There are many galleries in Village of the Arts. Please write about where you went, what you saw, what you learned and your thoughts about the art in a blog posting.


4. Breadth Assignment:

Complete a plaster carving over winter break. (Pick a block from the box) This is totally a subtractive process. Look at these examples. Clay loop tools and modeling tools as well as ordinary kitchen utensils will work for tools.


5. Make something out of clay that you wouldn’t expect to be made of clay. example: a toaster, a jacket This needs to be ready for firing after winter break and totally complete by exam date.


Everything needs to be completed by the last day of exams on January 21st.

There are many artists that create sculptures that tell stories. Open up my drop box and drag the ceramic links document to your desktop. Use this time to view the different sculptures. Write out ideas, draw sketches and plan how you would construct this artwork.

AP 3D

SUPER SKETCH BOOKS


You have your sketch book. You've seen the Ringling presentation with examples of great sketch books. Now it's your turn! In case you missed my post on Visual Journaling, take a look. You can also browse through these images on Google for examples.

Sketch out your ideas. Include pictures that inspire you. Write about how you feel about what you have created. Record glazes that you've used and how they have worked. Research new techniques and write the results of your experiments.

Your sketch book is part of your grade. Get started!

AP PORTFOLIOS


The AP 2009 portfolios are now online. Scroll down to view the sample 3D portfolios. Examine each the quality, breadth and concentration. Read over the requirements and scoring guidelines. Take notes in your sketch book. Write down any questions that you have. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what is expected of you and how many pieces you need to complete.

Currently you need to be working on your heArt and Soul piece to be ready for firing by 11/15.
You also need to contribute a piece for our fund raiser at Jon Carl's Salon. You can design a box or decorate a purse. We will take photos so that these pieces can still be included in your portfolio. These pieces are due early in November.

Remember: you need time to work, dry, fire, glaze and fire again. Large pieces need lot of time to dry.

AP 3-D

Tissue-wire sculpture: This sculpture can be free-standing or hang. It can be abstract or realistic.
John Richards at Yummy Mudpuddle has a many wonderful ideas. Take a look.
Your sketches for your 3D wire-tissue sculptures need to be approved before starting. Consider whether you want your sculpture to hang or include a light. You will need 10 layers of tissue paper. Each must dry before the next layer is applied. So while you are waiting, you can move on to the next assignment.

Decorative Ceramic Box:
Research ceramic boxes. Draw at least 5 sketches before beginning.Remember to focus on the elements of design. You will need to make a template.
